I Dreamed I Could Fly, 1993
Jonathan Borofsky, artist

In a reflection of the universal motif of flight as spiritual journey, Jonathan Borofsky’s I Dreamed I Co uld Fly is an interpretation of the ar tist’s dreams of soaring above ground. The six fiberglass figures, all resembling the artist, hover and cast large shadows in the high bay area of Civic Center Station. The work has an audio element as well—the figure s are accompanied by an occasional trill of a bird. The numbers on the sculpt ures are a particular characteristic of Borof ky's work: the artist consecutively number s all of his work—from working notes and sket ches to finished artworks.

"I've had quit e a few flying dreams in my lifetime. Many ot er people I've spoken to have had similar dreams. Sometimes I fly above it all, serene nd rather enlightened...other times my flying reams seem more like an escape from earthly concerns."

JONATHAN BOROFSKY grew up in Bo ston and was educated at Carnegie -Mellon, Yale, and the Ecole de Fountain bleau in France. Borofsky’s work has been e xhibited at galleries and museums around the world. In 1984, a retrospective of his work oured major museums throughout the country. B orofsky’s sculptures can be found in many loc tions in Los Angeles from “Molecule Me n” which holds a prominent location in fron t of the Roybal Federal Building, to the “Ballerina Clown” on Main Street in Venic e, to the large activated “Hammering Man” in he plaza of the California Mart at Sprin g and Olympic Streets. These sculpture s, as is true of most of Borofsky’s other wor s, are recognizable forms—humans, clowns, anim als—used in a playful manner and unusual con text, provoking diverse interpretation.
